In a rather shocking incident, a snake was found in Mumbai’s Kandivali (east) on Saturday as it struggled to survive after a person had covered its head with a used condom. The checkered keelback snake was “highly disoriented” and was taken to a veterinary officer soon after it was rescued.
WHAT IS THE STORY?
The snake was spotted near the Green Meadows housing society at around 8:30am. One of the local residents called Mita Malvankar, a snake rescuer, for help and she rushed to the spot, The Times Of India reports.
“I had received a call from a local resident, Vaishali Tanha, informing me that a snake was noticed moving in an erratic manner because a ‘plastic bag’ was covering its head. When I rushed to the location, I was shocked to see that someone had mischievously put a dirty, used condom on the keelback,” Mita Malvankar told TOI.
HOW WAS THE SNAKE RESCUED?
The snake found it difficult to breathe owing to the “synthetic obstruction”. Hence, Mita caught hold of it to remove the condom.
“I suspect that some trained snake catcher or an expert may have done this cruelty, because it is not easy to handle a checkered keelback whose bite can be very painful, though not venomous. The sharp, needle-like teeth of a keelback sink into its victim and do not let it go immediately,” Mita added.
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE SNAKE WAS RESCUED?
After the snake was rescued, Mita took the reptile to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali. Dr Shailesh Pethe, wildlife veterinary officer, checked the condition of the snake and said that it was released at a safe location in the forest after treatment.
“The snake visibly showed some signs of stress when it was brought to SGNP, but it did not have any external injuries. We later released it at a safe location in the forest. An offence has been registered against unknown persons by the forest officials,” Dr Shailesh Pethe told TOI.
